Portugal is an amazing country to visit, but most people will end up visiting Lisbon, Porto, or Algarve. In this article I would like to talk about places in Portugal most people will probably never know about, particularly, the Vilar da Amoreira river beach.

This is not a traditional beach, but more of a a swimming pool in a river!

It is located near the village "Pampilhosa da Serra" and it is two and a half hours drive from Lisbon and Porto.

Once you get there, it is usually easy to park the car in the organized parking lot (with marked parking spaces!).

This a beach built in a very calm area on the margin of the Portuguese river "Zêzere" and it consists on a floating device that allows water in, thus creating a very safe swimming pool with the water from the river.

You will not have the sand from a traditional beach, but you can lay your towel inside the floating area and enjoy the sun.

The water is not cold at all! you can immediately dive in and enjoy an excellent temperature.

For those taking children, there is a smaller swimming pool inside (a second one) that is built for them, which is also very safe.

It can, however, get crowded, but you can always leave your towel outside the floating area (in the river margin) take a dive in the swimming pool area and return to get your towel.

Outside the swimming pool, there is a small restaurant and an area for eating, which is excellent for a family meal in a very beautiful place.

I edited a video with the images I captured when I visited this beach in August:

Conclusion

Visiting Vilar da Amoreira River beach will allow you to know a region of Portugal that is not touristy and where you'll mostly see Portuguese.

This is not a traditional beach with sand and sea waver, but more of a swimming pool built from a floating device in the margins of a river.

The beach is located in a very beautiful area of the river "Zêzere" and the water is calm and warm.

It is at about two and a half hours drive from both Lisbon and Porto and once you get there is usually easy to park.

This is place in Portugal most people will probably never know about, but is totally worth the visit.
