The answer for carrying water while traveling: trail running
Drinking water is a very important advice in life in general, and particularly while traveling.
I visited Japan in the summer (August to be more precise) and one of my biggest mistakes was not to drink more water.
Drinking water is very important since we walk a lot in the heat, which makes us lose water and minerals through our sweating.
However, it is always a pain to either keep buying water all the time or to carry the weight of a water bottle.
To drink regularly while traveling, we can opt for 2 strategies:
1. Buy water as you go and carry less stuff
In almost every place we visit, there will almost always be places to buy water so you don't really need to be carrying a bottle with you.
The downside of this strategy, however, is that you spend more money and risk going to a place where it might not be that easy to buy it immediately.
2. Carry a water bottle with you
This is an excellent option since you have water on you all the time and you can drink regularly.
The downside of this strategy is that you'll probably be carrying a day pack and, inside, the weight of a water bottle.
The size of the bottle will determine how tired you'll be. Carry a smaller bottle and you'll need to refill it many times; carry a big one and you'll have pain in your shoulders from the weight inside the bag.
So, what is the best solution to carry water while traveling?
My approach to trying to resolve this was to get a bottle that was lightweight and that did not take much space.
Since I like to run on trails, the solution presented itself very obviously: Trail Running flasks!
This was perfect to me because it is very lightweight, it does not take a lot of space, and when you drink it all, you can squeeze it into your pocket and it takes no space at all.
This is specially true if you opt for the 250ml or the 500ml bottle.
It isn't enough water to get you through the day, but is enough until you get a refill, which can be from a free water source (e.g., a fountain in a garden) or from just buying a bottle in the supermarket.
Fine, if it's empty I put it inside a pocket, but what if I don't want to carry a backpack with me all the time?
This was a question I had for myself for a long time.
I try to carry as least stuff as possible during the day, so I usually opt for not carrying a backpack while walking around. But the water flask solution would make me bring a backpack with me.
Well, not quite.
I found a solution that allows me to carry water and doesn't weight me down: the fanny pack!
The water flask fits well inside the fanny pack and you have something to carry it on without being weight down by a backpack.
So this is my solution to the problem of carrying water while traveling. It's perfect for my needs.
Conclusion
Drinking water is a very important advice in life in general, and particularly while traveling.
However, it is always a pain to either keep buying water all the time or to carry the weight of a water bottle.
I found the solution to my problem in the Trail Running flasks!
These are very lightweight, do not take a lot of space, and when it's empty I can just squeeze it into one of my pockets.
To avoid carrying it by hand or bringing a backpack with me at all times, I just put the water flask inside of a fanny pack.
